Aero Motion Australia has been involved with the operation of remotely piloted aircraft in remote and difficult to reach locations. Over the last few years, we have travelled extensively through Papua New Guinea for earthquake damage assessment operations and more recently with National Geographic on a historical exploration of the Kokoda Track. Aero Motion Australia has flown UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) on missions at altitudes above 6000 feet ASL (above sea level). Payloads flown include LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) a remote sensing method that uses light in the form of a pulsed laser to measure ranges or variable distances between the aircraft and the Earth.
This LIDAR sensor is an invaluable tool for detecting terrain contours and areas of interest where there is dense vegetation canopy, perfect for the PNG environment.
Working in the Highlands of PNG requires massive logistical efforts. To mobilise staff and equipment requires access to security and police personnel, Four Wheel Drive vehicles, helicopters and local support for the carriage of equipment by foot in rugged terrain.
Due to the very high rainfall and storms in PNG, there are minimal windows of opportunities where clear skies allow us to fly. Regardless of these barriers and the challenges of flying at altitudes, we can fly successful missions, capture and deliver reliable and precise data sets for clients.
