The evolution of Aero Motion's Helicopter Long Lines
As a helicopter crewman with over 15 years of civil aviation experience, one of my responsibilities involves the pre-flight assembly, inspection, maintenance and repairs of helicopter rigging equipment used for helicopter lifting and fire fighting operations.
Each task brings new challenges and environmental considerations. Being at the front line of these operations has allowed us to design and develop our speciality range of rigging equipment, products and services.
In the past, we had to rely on long lines made overseas, with no local support for servicing, modifications or repairs. We had to do most of the repairs ourselves in the field and found that often the long lines we had to use were not durable enough for the harsh Australian conditions. Covers were tearing as the material was too thin, which exposed the critical inner rope to abrasion, dirt, cuts and tears.
After spending many hours having to repair rigging equipment, I decided to start producing long lines myself, and with the help of some industry legends, Aero Motion Australia was formed.
An industrial sewing machine was acquired along with lots of new knowledge, learning to sew the covers, sourcing and testing materials for optimal endurance and strength, testing rope, correct sizing, splicing, designing the rigging fittings to suit the job and equipment at hand.
Throughout this process we solved problems such as the slippage of the accessories cables with a cable strain relief system using a simple āPā clamp and hook and loop fastener, securing the cable and ensuring the durability of the materials through rigorous testing.
I still work as a helicopter crewman maintaining skills and qualifications as a rigger, tower climber, rope access technician and technical adviser and designer for aviation companies supporting defence, law enforcement, emergency, rescue and fire services, civil construction and rotary-wing general aviation operators and proud that my products make the workplace safer for air and ground crew.
